Mermaid Collection

# KW-608

The Mermaid Collection is six iridescent pigmentsmade fromcalcium sodium borosilicate. These pigments are super sparkly at alarge particle size (60-400 microns), but do not feel gritty.

In the USA, natural mica used in cosmetics is not allowed if larger than 150 microns in size. However, larger-sized Synthetic Micaand Borosilicate products are currently permitted (although there are industrydiscussions suggesting this may someday change and that the 150 micron size limitation will apply across all ingredients). This table shows how our various iridescent collections compare.

Collection Main Ingredient Particle Size
Interference Natural Mica 5-50 microns
Planetary Natural Mica 10-60 microns
Moondust Synthetic Mica 30-120 microns
Sparks! Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate 20-200 microns
Microfine Glitter Polyethylene Terephthalate (plastic) 150 microns
Solvent Resistant Glitter Polyethylene Terephthalate (plastic) 200 microns
Starbites Synthetic Mica 100-260 microns
Mermaid Calcium Sodium Borosilicate 60-400 microns

Borosilicate pigments like the Mermaid colors are uniquely reflective. Also, the largeparticle size means they aremore sparkly.

The pigments can also be used inmany things. In particular we recommend them fornail polish, shimmer body lotion and soap. They may also be used in lip products and to our knowledge they are also approved for use in eye products per the FDA. However, because of the large particle size we arelabeling them as "not recommended for use in eye products". You are welcome to do your own research into the matter.

These are really (really, really, really) pretty. They have a very slight duochrome effect (weaker than the Starbites) and have a large particle size compared to the Starbites (the closest pigment set I have to compare to). They probably need twice as much pigment volumewise to get fairly opaque effects than Starbites/Moondust/Travel Tos, as the stuff is very fluffy (this is in nail polish). The colors are not as pastel as the powder swatches make them out to be, except for the green, which is a seafoam sort of lightish green.

The colors are gorgeous, very vivid, however due to the density required, they are not useful as nail polish pigments, great as an polish additive but unable to be used like starbites or moondusts. No duochrome at all, but rather an occasional fleck of a different shade within same color family. Lovely but I will not be purchasing again. Best for body lotions and lippies.

I love these! I use these to add that extra sparkle to my nail polishes. As much as I love duochromes, I actually like that these are not. They are perfect for when I want a simple contrasting sparkle (ex. pink sparkle in blue base) rather than the complicated myriad of colors that duochrome pigments can provide.

I'm loving the sparkle in these. The color is really vivid, more so than I expected from the picture. Another really lovely addition to the polish pigments collection you folks are inspiring me to acquire!

I absolutely love the way these look, and they're amazing if used in lipgloss. I tried mixing them into some loose eyeshadows, though, and these were so light that they floated around too much. Throughout the day, they also seemed to fall onto my cheeks and nose. If you use these, I'd definitely recommend using them in something where they're suspended.

Fairy violet is so pretty in a clear coat, with about 3or4 mixing beads! I'd have bought the entire collection of samples, if I had known how much I would like them...
